What is the API/Open about?

The API/Open Deutsche Bank Hackathon is an innovative playground where you can create your solution in the field beyond banking. Throughout the course of three eventful days, along with your fellow team members, you will have the chance to conceptualize your idea, develop a prototype and pitch it to a panel. We are offering you an inspiring platform, our new API and expert support.

Why is Deutsche Bank hosting a Hackathon?

Banking is changing, just as we are. We want to work with vibrant creative teams and see how your ideas come to life. We wish to have the first-hand experience, that’s why we are organizing a Hackathon. Our goal is to initiate a platform where your ideas can grow and be realized into a successful product. That’s the purpose of our API/Open.

Who can participate?

We are looking for teams of people, who can think outside of the box - innovative pioneers and enthusiasts, with skills in coding, design and entrepreneurship.
 Please note, that in order to apply for the event your team should include at least 1 designer, 1 developer and 1 ideator.

Who cannot participate?

Minors as well as employees of Deutsche Bank or its affiliates, public officials and employees of companies where participation would constitute public sector participation will be fully excluded from participation in the API/Open Deutsche Bank Hackathon.

Is there a minimum or maximum number of team members?

Yes. A team consists of 3 to 6 members. To be competitive you will need: a developer, an entrepreneur, a designer. Any additional specialists will be appreciated.

How does the application work?

Have your own brilliant idea you’d like to work on at the API/Open.
Form a dream-team of 3 up to 6 members.
Elect a team captain who fills out the team application for all team members. Done! Simple, right?

Can we change our idea after the application?

Unfortunately not - you need to be clear about your idea before you hand in your team application. After that, changes will not be possible.

What are the prizes?

Beside great prestige, a good reputation and our interest in a long-term business relationship, the jury will award the best 3 teams with a total prize of 50.000 €. Additionally, one team will be awarded with the tech award for the best technical implementation and usage of the API.

Why is there an application process?

Unfortunately, we can only provide a limited number of seats at the event. Therefore, we want to give these seats to the best teams to compete at the API/Open.

What are the selection criteria?


The selection process will be led by Deutsche Bank. Team ideas will be challenged against the set criteria: Creativity, Technology, Value.

Does our prototype or product become property of Deutsche Bank?

Of course not. Everything you bring or built during the Hackathon belongs to you. Nevertheless, thanks to participating you will present your idea to others, including the media, who if interested, will report about your idea. Are we able to work with our own laptops or do we have to use provided equipment?

Important point! It’s BYOD – you need to work with your own devices. So please bring all you need to work with. We won’t provide any computers or devices. If you want to bring special equipment e.g. bigger machines than a laptop please contact us upfront.

What do we need to bring?

Grab all you need to work - computer, thumb drive, external hard disk drive. You will be provided with free Internet access. Bringing toiletries is a good idea - take your toothpaste, towel, deodorant etc. and extra clothes. If you enjoy napping, don’t forget a throw pillow and a sleeping bag.

Yes, we welcome applicants from near and far. Please be aware that we cannot cover any travel expenses.

Are there more details about the Deutsche Bank API?


The developer portal will go live along with the API/Open event. We’ll start with basic functions, as named on the microsite, and grow with our first use-cases.

What about data security?


In order to ensure the best creative playground, during the Hackathon we will work with fictitious customer data only - a simulated API (sand box). So there won’t be any direct access to real customer data in the context of the event.
In the future, digital ecosystem access to aggregated and expressly approved by the customer records, will be possible.

What kind of support can I count on during the API/Open?

We will have an API expert team onsite for your support. Furthermore, you will have the chance to take part in optional workshops on several topics and one on one team sessions.

Should we prepare our project upfront?


We recommend using the time before the API/Open to make yourselves familiar with the challenge and your project strategy. Take your time to set up your devices, software and tools, as you surely don’t want to waste time running updates. You can work with your existing code, but if you do so, please let us know beforehand, to make sure things are fair. Existing code will be considered in the valuation. Furthermore, you are free to brainstorm, make plans and scribble wireframes prior to the event. As long as you mind all copyrights, resources, like images, data sets etc. that are freely available are permitted.

Is there an entry fee for the API/Open?

Nope. The event is completely free of charge for all members.

What will the jury presentation look like?


On Sunday, October 30, 2016 you will have the chance to present your project. You will have 4 minutes to demonstrate your idea. Please keep in mind the official language of the event will be English. All presented entries have to be software prototypes. PowerPoint presentations are not required.

Will there be food & beverages?

Yes, that part is on us. While you focus on your idea, let us spoil you with delicious food, beverages and snacks all day long. If you suffer any food intolerances or allergies etc. please let us know in advance, so that we can prepare

Are accommodation options on site inclusive?

Yes, there will be a chill-out area with cots. Feel free to bring your own throw pillow or sleeping bag to make yourself at home.

What happens if due to last-minute circumstances I will not be able to attend?

We will be sad to hear that, as team members will be counting on you. To avoid a headache, please let us know ASAP, so that we can re-staff the team

Does everyone have to be on site the whole time?


To take part in the API/Open you must be able to attend the event in Berlin in person on all three days. But of course, breaks are allowed and even encouraged, so that your brain cells remain fresh! You’re allowed to take a break from the event whenever you want to. But all your coding and work must be done on site. Remote working is not allowed

Will there be overnight security?


Yes, there will be security guards on site, nevertheless keep an eye on your belongings at all time.
